After being awarded Head Start grant funding, the South Bend Community School Corporation chose the Lafayette Early Childhood Center as the program’s principal site. This decision required that twelve new classrooms, an administrative office wing and food service renovations be constructed immediately to accommodate the increased enrollment. Additionally, the 24,650 square feet of new construction would need to take place during the regular school year, while minimizing disruption to the existing facilities. In response to these “speed of construction” challenges, the Architects designed the structure as a steel frame with metal stud infill.
