The new Benjamin Harrison Primary Center replaced an older, existing elementary school in a diverse urban neighborhood on the west side of South Bend, Indiana. The floor plan was organized into a series of “pods” in order to reduce the amount of noise and distraction inherent to a large, 750-student population. The 120,000-square foot building was zoned to readily accommodate intensive public use as well. Additionally, spaces were provided to house a number of unique programs and partnerships, including: bi-lingual preschool, adult education, daycare and a hospital-sponsored health center.
