IU SOUTH BEND EDUCATION & ARTS BUILDING

The 130,000 square foot Education and Arts Building on the South Bend campus of Indiana University involved a major renovation of the former Associates Building. The critical design challenge was to fit the programmed spaces within the existing building footprint. In addition to its academic function, the building was configured to encourage interaction with the local community by providing an Art Gallery, Lecture Hall, Education Resource Center and a Dental Clinic. The building was designed exclusively using Building Information Modeling (BIM), a process which involved constructing a 3-D virtual model to help identify and minimize conflicts during construction. The project has been awarded LEED Certification from the USGBC.
